Destinations in Italy for those in love
Discover romantic Liguria – Liguria which has inspired the works of artists, authors and poets.

A romantic itinerary must start in Alassio, also known as the “Town of Lovers”, according to ancient legend; the name of the town is linked to lovers Adelasia and Aleramo who after eloping founded the community of Alaxia. The legend is clearly portrayed by the famous Muretto (small wall) with its coloured tiles, the bronze statue of the “Innamorati” (Lovers) by Eros Pellini, the opera “Les Amoureux” by Raymond Peynet and the post box which on St. Valentine’s Day fills up with poems and love letters.
Albissola Marina, is a favourite choice for those in love, its Lungomare degli Artisti (the Artists’ Promenade), a kilometre long route is considered an ideal place to walk hand in hand while admiring ceramic mosaics dating back to the Sixties. More than four million tiles make up the mosaics of the town’s promenade. The artwork was conceived and signed by artists like Gambetta, Rossello, Fontana, Lam, Luzzati, Salino, Fabbri, Porcù, Caldanzano, Capogrossi and Sassu.

Going further west we come to Imperia which also has its own lovers walk (a panoramic route along the “Domenico Moriani” sea-front which from Borgo Foce leads you towards Borgo Marina), and Montalto Ligure, the backdrop for the legendary love story of Giacomo and Francesca. The couple, who had escaped from Conte Oberto and his illiberal law of jus primae noctis (the right of the first night), reached Motalto Ligure in order to establish a village where love reigned. The famous spouses’ lodge, an ancient building situated inside the characteristic historic centre, where couples come from all over the world to get married, stands out among the hamlet’s narrow alleys, stone houses, arches, underground passages and the extremely high belfry of St. John the Baptist church.
In Sestri Levante, undoubtedly the most romantic place is the Baia del Silenzio – Bay of Silence, a real jewel that looks out over the Ligurian Sea.
Genoa provides two beautiful promenades, the Lungomare di Nervi and Boccadasse where the silence and the delightful views enchant couples.
